GTA V ERR_ error code on startup or during play
This one is not certain. It is marked possible: the guidance is safe and reasonable, but the diagnosis is not proven for every case. If it does not match what you are seeing, stop and ask rather than pushing on.
GTA V uses short codes for its own internal failures. The exact code matters — the general advice below is safe, but the specific answer depends on it.
What you see
- The game closes with a short code beginning ERR_
- The same code repeats on every launch, or appears at random during play
What usually causes it
- Corrupted or incomplete game files
- Memory or virtual-memory exhaustion (common with very large texture packs plus a small page file)
- Failing storage on the drive holding GTA V
- Overclocked or unstable hardware
Worth checking first
- Record the EXACT code — the letters after ERR_ decide the answer, and a guess at them is worse than no answer
- Check free space on the drive holding GTA V
- Check whether the code is always the same or varies
Safe steps, one at a time
- Write down the exact code and attach a screenshot
- Verify the game files through the store that installed GTA V
- Make sure the drive has at least 20 GB free
- Undo any CPU/GPU overclock while testing
These are suggestions, not instructions. Do only what you are comfortable with, back up anything important first, and stop if a step does not match what is on your screen. Advice, risk and responsibility.
When to stop and ask staff
Escalate with the exact code if it happens only on AGN. Codes that also appear in single-player are not AGN issues.
Looks like
FiveM / GTA V installation
What staff will need
- The exact ERR_ code, as text or screenshot
- Whether it happens in single-player too
- Free disk space
Applies to
Independent of AGN version.
