Handshake or authentication step fails while connecting
This one is not certain. It is marked possible: the guidance is safe and reasonable, but the diagnosis is not proven for every case. If it does not match what you are seeing, stop and ask rather than pushing on.
FiveM checks in with its own service as part of joining. That check did not complete.
What you see
- The connection gets past 'connecting' and then fails
- It fails on every server, not just AGN
- It may clear on its own after a while
What usually causes it
- Cfx.re's authentication service is degraded
- The FiveM session is stale after a very long uptime
- A network appliance interfering with the connection (some VPNs, some filtered networks)
Worth checking first
- Try a second FiveM server: failure on all of them points at Cfx.re or the player's network, not AGN
- Check whether a VPN or filtered network is in use
Safe steps, one at a time
- Fully close FiveM and start it again — this reissues the session
- Turn off any VPN while testing
- Wait a few minutes and retry if Cfx.re services are having trouble
