Others cannot hear me

Windows has a privacy switch that can block the microphone for games specifically, even when it works elsewhere.

What you see

  • You can hear others but nobody hears you
  • The microphone works in other applications, or it does not

What usually causes it

  • Windows microphone privacy permission is off for desktop apps
  • The wrong input device is selected as default or default communications
  • The microphone is muted in hardware (an inline switch or a mute button on the headset)
  • Input volume set very low, or an exclusive-mode app holding the device

Worth checking first

  • Check the Windows microphone privacy setting for desktop apps
  • Check the default input and default communications input devices
  • Check the input level meter while speaking
  • Check for a physical mute switch

Safe steps, one at a time

  • Turn on microphone access for desktop apps in Windows privacy settings
  • Set the correct microphone as BOTH default input and default communications input
  • Check the hardware mute switch on the headset or cable
  • Raise the input level and test in Windows Sound settings, where the meter should move as you speak
  • Restart FiveM after changing devices

These are suggestions, not instructions. Do only what you are comfortable with, back up anything important first, and stop if a step does not match what is on your screen. Advice, risk and responsibility.

When to stop and ask staff

Escalate if the microphone demonstrably works in Windows and in other apps, but not in game, for this player only.

Looks like

Player computer

What staff will need

  • Microphone privacy state
  • Default input devices
  • Whether the Windows level meter moves
  • Whether it works in Discord
