Moving of xyz.exe failed (err = 32)

The message

failed (err = 32)

FiveM tried to replace one of its own files during an update and Windows said the file was in use.

What you see

  • FiveM fails to update, naming a file it could not move
  • Error 32 is Windows' 'the file is in use'

What usually causes it

  • FiveM processes are still running. Cfx.re documents this as the cause
  • Aggressive antivirus holding the file open

Worth checking first

  • Check Task Manager for FiveM processes
  • Note the antivirus product

Safe steps, one at a time

  • Close every FiveM process in Task Manager and try again — Cfx.re's documented first step
  • Restarting the PC does the same thing and is the safer version if you are unsure which processes to close
  • If it persists, add the FiveM folder to antivirus exclusions. Cfx.re asks for a support ticket naming the antivirus if it still fails

These are suggestions, not instructions. Do only what you are comfortable with, back up anything important first, and stop if a step does not match what is on your screen. Advice, risk and responsibility.
