DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED or DEVICE_HUNG

The message

DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED

Windows lost contact with your graphics card and reset it. That is a driver or hardware event rather than something inside the game.

What you see

  • The game closes with a DXGI error
  • The screen may flicker or go black first
  • Other games or the desktop may also glitch

What usually causes it

  • The graphics driver stopped responding and Windows reset it
  • Unstable GPU overclock or undervolt (including 'factory OC' profiles in vendor tools)
  • Overheating or an underpowered / failing power supply
  • A driver version that is buggy for this card

Worth checking first

  • Check GPU driver version and how old it is
  • Check whether any overclocking tool is running (MSI Afterburner, vendor tuning software)
  • Check GPU temperatures during play if you have a monitor for it
  • Check whether the same happens in other games

Safe steps, one at a time

  • Update the graphics driver from AMD's, NVIDIA's or Intel's own website
  • Reset any GPU overclock or undervolt to stock while testing
  • Make sure the PC has airflow and the fans are working
  • If it only started after a recent driver update, install the previous driver version

These are suggestions, not instructions. Do only what you are comfortable with, back up anything important first, and stop if a step does not match what is on your screen. Advice, risk and responsibility.

When to stop and ask staff

Not an AGN issue in itself. Escalate if several players report it in the same AGN location, which can indicate a heavy streamed asset.

Player computer

What staff will need

  • Exact DXGI code
  • GPU and driver version
  • Whether other games do it
  • Overclocking tools in use

Applies to

Independent of AGN version.
