The message

Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Windows is drawing your screen with a basic fallback driver, not your actual graphics card. Nothing will run well until the real driver is installed.

What you see

  • Extremely low frame rate everywhere, including menus
  • The game may refuse to start
  • Screen resolution options are very limited

What usually causes it

  • No real graphics driver is installed — Windows is using its fallback display driver
  • A failed driver update or a driver-cleaning tool that removed the driver

Worth checking first

  • Confirm the adapter name reported by the Support Assistant
  • Check Device Manager for a display adapter with a warning icon

Safe steps, one at a time

  • Install the proper graphics driver from AMD, NVIDIA or Intel for your exact card
  • On a laptop, prefer the driver from the laptop maker's support page if the vendor driver refuses to install
  • Restart after installing and re-check
